Conzumel

City overview

Cozumel is a Caribbean island off the coast of Quintana Roo, reached by a short ferry from Playa del Carmen or by direct flights into its own international airport. It is best known for the Mesoamerican reef that runs along its western shore, which makes it one of the world's great diving and snorkelling destinations, and for a compact walkable town, San Miguel, where most visitors stay. For kosher travellers the island is unusually well served for its size: Chabad of Cozumel sits in the centre of San Miguel and anchors a cluster of kosher restaurants, a kosher grocery and a caterer, nearly all within a few minutes' walk of one another.

Getting Around

Public transit

Cozumel has no scheduled public bus network for visitors.

Getting around means taxis, a rental vehicle or, within San Miguel, walking - the town centre is compact and the Chabad House, the kosher restaurants and the kosher grocery are all within a few blocks of each other.

Rideshare

Uber, DiDi and the other ride-hailing apps do not operate on Cozumel, and travellers should not plan around them.

Taxis are the island's dominant mode and are run by a single drivers' union. Fares are set by zone rather than by meter, and an official tariff board is posted at the ferry terminal, at the airport and at the main ranks. Agree the fare before getting in, and check the posted board so you know the zone rate for your trip.

Car rental

Renting a jeep, car or scooter is the usual way to drive the round-island coastal loop, which taxis price expensively.

Mexican liability insurance is compulsory and is generally not covered by foreign credit card policies, so expect to buy it at the counter. A valid driving licence is required and helmets are mandatory on scooters. Note that the wild east coast has no fuel stations and patchy phone signal, so fill up in San Miguel before setting out.

Airport

Cozumel International Airport (CZM) sits just outside San Miguel and is operated by ASUR, with a single terminal and eight gates. It handled 646,606 passengers in 2025. Aeromexico and Volaris fly to Mexico City and Viva serves Monterrey year round, alongside American to Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami and United to Houston. Much of the international schedule is seasonal, roughly December to April, adding Charlotte, Chicago, Denver, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Montreal, Toronto and Calgary. Outside those months there may be no direct flight from your city, and the usual alternative is to fly into Cancun and take the ferry across from Playa del Carmen. Arriving passengers use a shared colectivo van service into town; departing passengers take a taxi. The airport is contactable on +52 987 872 2081.

Good to know

Best time to visit

December through April brings warm, dry days and the calmest seas for diving and snorkelling, while the June to November hurricane season is hotter, wetter and noticeably quieter.

Insider tips

Stay in San Miguel if kosher food matters to you - the Chabad House, Alma, Chocolatte, the kosher grocery and Pita Loca are all within a short walk of each other, while the big beach resorts sit several kilometres down the coast and commit you to a taxi for every meal. Book Shabbat meals at the Chabad House in advance through its registration form rather than turning up. The ferry to Playa del Carmen is the gateway to the mainland day trips, but neither ferry company publishes a fixed timetable, so check the last sailing back before you commit to anything far inland. Evening attractions on the mainland, such as the Cirque du Soleil show and the Xcaret night performance, do not work as day trips from the island. Bring reef-safe sunscreen: the marine parks and protected areas around Cozumel and Akumal permit biodegradable sun protection only.

Safety & emergency

Cozumel is among the safer destinations in Quintana Roo, and most visits pass without incident; normal precautions in the town centre and around the cruise piers are enough. The national emergency number is 911 and reaches police, fire and ambulance. Local direct lines: Policia y Transito (987) 872-0092, Bomberos (987) 872-0800, Cruz Roja ambulance (987) 872-1058, Proteccion Civil (987) 872-6452, and the Ayuntamiento de Cozumel (987) 872-9800. There is no United States consular agency on the island; American citizens are served by the U.S. Consular Agency in Playa del Carmen on 999 316 7168 from within Mexico or 1-844-528-6611 from the United States. Canadian citizens are covered by the Consular Agency of Canada in Playa del Carmen, whose district explicitly includes Cozumel, at Plaza Paraiso Caribe, Modulo C, Planta 2, Oficina C21-24, Av. 10 Sur entre Calle 3 y 5 Sur, Colonia Centro, 77710 Playa del Carmen, on +52 55 5724 9796.
