City overview
Budapest, Hungary's capital, straddles the Danube: hilly Buda with the Castle District on the west bank and flat, busy Pest on the east. It is home to Central Europe's largest Jewish community, and its heart for visitors is the old Jewish Quarter in District VII, around Kazinczy utca, Dob utca and Dohány utca, where the Orthodox Kazinczy Street Synagogue, most kosher restaurants, the kosher grocery and the great Dohány Street Synagogue all sit within a few minutes' walk. Orthodox life is organized by two communities: EMIH, which is affiliated with Chabad and runs the Chabad House on Károly körút and synagogues across the city, and MAOIH, the historic Orthodox community of the Kazinczy Street Synagogue. Most kosher food is certified by the Beth Din Tzedek of the Chareidi Communities of Budapest under Rabbi Boruch Oberlander. The Budapest Eruv covers most of Pest within its mapped boundary; Buda and Óbuda are outside it.
