St. Lucia

City overview

St. Lucia is a lush volcanic island in the Eastern Caribbean, best known for the twin Piton peaks rising straight out of the sea, rainforest waterfalls, drive-in sulphur springs, and calm west-coast beaches. Jewish infrastructure here is new and entirely Chabad-based — Rabbi Avromy and Sternie Super established the island's first Jewish center in 2018, serving roughly 200 Jewish residents plus visitors.

Getting Around

Public transit

Local minibuses (green plates with an "M" prefix) run set routes between towns for roughly EC$2.50–8.00 and are the cheapest option, though they stop running after dark and don't reach most waterfalls, trails, or secluded beaches.

Rideshare

There is no Uber, Lyft, Bolt, or any rideshare app in St.

Lucia — ride-hailing has never been licensed to operate on the island, so licensed taxis and pre-booked transfers are the alternative. Taxis carry blue "TX" plates, are not metered, and run on fixed/standardized fares — always confirm the price and the currency (EC$ or US$) before getting in.

Car rental

Renting a car is worthwhile if you plan to explore the island independently — but note that driving is on the left, roads are narrow, steep, and winding, and visitors must obtain a temporary local driving permit (available at the airport, the Castries police station, or rental offices).

Airport

St. Lucia has two airports, and which one you land at meaningfully changes your transfer time. Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) in Vieux Fort at the island's southern tip handles nearly all international flights from the U.S., Canada, U.K., and Europe — it's roughly 39 miles from Rodney Bay in the north, a 60–90 minute drive. George F.L. Charles Airport (SLU) near Castries handles regional Caribbean flights only, and sits about 15–25 minutes from Rodney Bay and the northern resort areas. Some travelers deliberately route through a regional hub into SLU to avoid the long UVF transfer.

Good to know

Best time to visit

The dry season runs December through April with the least rain and steady trade winds — March is typically the driest month, while May–June offer nearly the same weather with fewer crowds and lower rates.

Insider tips

The Eastern Caribbean dollar (XCD) is official, but U.S. dollars are accepted essentially everywhere and prices are often quoted in US$ — carry small bills for taxis and tips. English is the official language. Confirm taxi fares and currency before the ride starts. If staying in the north, build 60–90 minutes plus a buffer into your return trip to Hewanorra.

Safety & emergency

St. Lucia is rated Level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions) by the U.S. State Department — its lowest advisory level. Violent crime against tourists is rare; the main risks are petty theft, bag snatching, and car break-ins, more common in busier urban areas like Castries. A dedicated Tourism Police Unit patrols the main visitor zones (Rodney Bay, Castries Market, Soufrière). Avoid walking alone at night on beaches or in poorly lit areas, and use only licensed taxis (blue "TX" plates). Emergency response is fastest in the north and in resort areas, slower in rural parts of the island. Police: 999 or 911 Fire & Ambulance: 911 Main public hospital: Victoria Hospital, Castries Private option: Tapion Hospital, Castries
