City overview
Toronto is Canada's largest city, home to about 3 million people on the shore of Lake Ontario, with world-class museums, a lively waterfront and Niagara Falls within day-trip range. It also has one of North America's largest Jewish communities, about 187,000 people across the Toronto region. Orthodox life runs along Bathurst Street, from Forest Hill and Bathurst–Lawrence north through Bathurst Manor and North York into Thornhill, a corridor lined with shuls, kollels, kosher restaurants, bakeries and groceries and covered by a community eruv. Downtown, where most hotels are, has a Chabad house but little kosher food and no eruv, so observant visitors often base themselves uptown.
Toronto Eruv (North Toronto, the Bathurst corridor and Thornhill). Toronto's community eruv has operated since December 1996 under the guidance of the Va'ad Harabonim of Toronto, and a trained team inspects it every week before Shabbos. Its southern edge is the CP rail tracks near Dupont Street, and it takes in Forest Hill, Bathurst–Lawrence, Bathurst Manor, North York, Willowdale and Thornhill on both sides of Yonge Street up to Highway 407. Highways 400, 401 and 407 are outside the eruv. You can carry across the 401 only at Bathurst Street, Wilson Avenue and Bayview Avenue, not at Keele, Dufferin, Avenue Road or Yonge, and you cannot carry across the 407 at any street. You can carry across Yonge Street between Steeles Avenue and the 407. Check the status every week: it is posted on torontoeruv.org every Friday, the recorded hotline at 416-350-2879 is updated on Fridays after noon, and email alerts are available at torontoeruv.org/alerts. For a question about a specific address, call 416-364-2700 or email info@torontoeruv.org. Downtown Toronto has no eruv. The downtown core, the Entertainment District, the waterfront, Yorkville and the downtown hospital district (Mount Sinai, Toronto General, SickKids) are all outside it.
