City overview

Vail is a small resort town strung along I-70 in Colorado's Gore Valley, with Vail Mountain rising directly behind its pedestrian villages. Jewish life for a visitor centres on one institution: Chabad of Vail, the Jewish Community Center at 450 E Lionshead Circle in Lionshead Village, close to the Eagle Bahn Gondola. It holds Shabbat morning services with a Kiddush lunch, runs a Minyan Maker sign-up for weekday minyanim, and organises holiday programmes through the year. Kosher food in Vail comes mainly through Chabad, which stocks frozen kosher meat, poultry, hot dogs, sausages and cold cuts and runs a pre-order Shabbat menu delivered to hotels in the ski season, and through certified packaged products at City Market, which carries kosher breads, challah, grape juice, wine, pastries, cheeses and dairy. For a Shabbat-observant visitor, Lionshead is the practical base: about a dozen hotels and condominium buildings there are an estimated 5-to-10-minute walk from Chabad. Vail Village lies further east along the pedestrian core, while West Vail and East Vail depend on the town's free buses.

Getting Around

Public transit

The Town of Vail runs free buses year-round from the Vail Transportation Center, with routes to West Vail (Red, Green and Express), East Vail, Sandstone, Lions Ridge and the Golf Course.

On the current schedule service runs from about 6:00 AM, with the main routes continuing until 2:00 AM; on outlying routes, pull the stop request cord before your stop. From Denver, CDOT's Bustang West Line ($17 one way) and Pegasus shuttle vans ($20 one way; 6 trips a day Monday–Thursday, 10 Friday–Sunday) run from Denver Union Station and Federal Center Station to the Vail Transportation Center at 241 S Frontage Rd E. Vail itself can be covered comfortably without a car.

Rideshare

Uber operates in Vail and allows rides to be reserved up to 90 days ahead, though it warns that pickup times can be longer than in larger cities.

For airport transfers the scheduled shuttles are the more dependable option, particularly in heavy snow or late at night.

Car rental

Hertz, Avis, Enterprise and Budget have desks on site at Eagle County Regional Airport; reserve ahead in peak season.

Denver International Airport's rental companies operate from off-airport lots reached by shuttle. In winter, Colorado's traction and chain laws can be in effect on I-70, so check CDOT's current requirements before driving. Day parking in the Vail Village and Lionshead structures is paid in winter at rates the Town sets each season.

Airport

Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) is about 30 miles west of Vail, roughly 40 to 50 minutes by road, with American, Delta, United and Alaska flights including year-round and seasonal nonstops from cities such as New York, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Miami, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Denver International Airport (DEN) is about 125 miles east, typically 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on I-70 weather and traffic. Epic Mountain Express runs shared shuttles from both airports (from $49 per person from EGE; $79–$139 from DEN in winter), and from Denver Union Station the Bustang and Pegasus services reach Vail.

Good to know

Best time to visit

Ski season runs from mid-November to mid-April, with Vail Mountain scheduled to open for 2026–27 on November 13, 2026; the December holidays and Presidents' Week are peak holiday periods at the resort. Summer brings hiking, biking and festivals, while Chabad's pre-order Shabbat meal service is seasonal and closes for the year in spring.

Insider tips

Order Chabad's Shabbat meals at least 48 hours ahead; delivery to Vail hotels is $15, and dishes can be prepared for warming in a hotel oven on request. Book a Lionshead hotel if you plan to walk to Shabbat services. On Vail's outlying routes, pull the stop request cord before your stop. I-70 between Denver and Vail closes in storms, so leave slack on travel days, and allow a day to adjust to the altitude, drinking plenty of water. Weekday minyanim are arranged through Chabad's Minyan Maker sign-up.

Safety & emergency

The practical risks in Vail are altitude (the town sits above 8,000 feet), winter driving on I-70 and mountain weather. Dial 911 for any emergency; speech- or hearing-impaired callers can text 911. The Town of Vail Police Department covers the town, with non-emergency dispatch on 970-479-2201. Vail Health Hospital, with a 24-hour emergency department, is at 180 S Frontage Road W; main line (970) 476-2451. For I-70 and pass conditions call 970-479-2226 or dial 511 rather than 911.
