Barbados is the easternmost island in the Caribbean, best known for its calm west-coast beaches, British-inflected culture and rum heritage. Jewish life on the island runs entirely through Chabad of Barbados, led by Rabbi Eli and Sterna Chaikin since 2018 from Porters, St. James, just north of Holetown on the west coast. There are no kosher restaurants anywhere on the island — kosher food comes through Chabad's takeout and catering service, which delivers island-wide, and through packaged kosher-certified goods in the larger supermarkets. Chabad holds a minyan on Shabbat during the winter high season and hosts sit-down Shabbat meals open to visitors by reservation. There is no eruv anywhere in Barbados, and no mikvah currently in operation, though one is being built.

Getting Around

Public transit

Three systems run the same routes for a flat fare of BBD $3.50: the blue government Transport Board buses, yellow privately owned minibuses, and the white ZR vans.

All converge on Bridgetown, and the coastal Highway 1 route along the west coast is the useful one for Holetown, Porters and Speightstown. Exact change is expected on government buses.

Rideshare

Uber and Lyft do not operate in Barbados.

Taxis are plentiful but unmetered, with fares set by government-published rates by zone — agree the fare before setting off. Hotels will call a licensed taxi, and drivers are commonly hired by the half-day or day for island touring.

Car rental

Renting a car is genuinely useful here, since the attractions are scattered across the interior and the east coast.

Driving is on the LEFT, roads are narrow and often unlit at night, and a temporary Barbados driving permit is required — rental agencies issue it on the spot.

Airport

Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) sits on the south-east corner of the island in Christ Church. It is roughly 15 minutes from the south coast hotels, and about 40 to 45 minutes from Holetown, Porters and the west coast where Chabad is based. It is the main hub for the Eastern Caribbean, with direct service from the UK, US east coast, Canada and regional islands.

Best time to visit

Mid-December through April is the dry season and the island's high season, with warm days, steady trade winds and little rain; the wettest and most humid stretch runs from June through November.

Insider tips

Stay on the west coast between Holetown and Porters if Chabad matters to your trip — that is where Chabad sits, where its recommended hotels and villas cluster, and where Shabbat meals are walkable. Order kosher food well ahead: takeout requires at least 48 hours' notice, Shabbat meals need reserving in advance, and the service pauses entirely for part of the summer. Bringing your own meat requires an import permit, and poultry is banned outright and will be confiscated. Barbados dollars are pegged at two to one US dollar and US currency is accepted almost everywhere, so there is no need to change money.

Safety & emergency

Barbados is widely regarded as one of the safer Caribbean islands for visitors, and Chabad of Barbados says plainly that it is considered very safe for tourists. Ordinary precautions still apply — avoid isolated beaches after dark, don't leave valuables visible in a rental car, and use licensed taxis at night.
