City overview
Montreal's Orthodox community lives in the west-central part of the island rather than downtown. The densest cluster runs through Côte-Saint-Luc, Hampstead and Snowdon, where Décarie Boulevard, Van Horne Avenue, Victoria Avenue and Côte-Saint-Luc Road carry most of the kosher groceries, take-out counters and restaurants — Décarie Square, at 6900 Décarie, holds several kosher eateries under one roof. Outremont and neighbouring Mile End are home to the city's Hasidic communities and their bakeries and shops, while Laval (Chomedey) and the West Island (Dollard-des-Ormeaux) have congregations and Chabad houses of their own. For Shabbat, the real choice is between downtown and Old Montreal — central for sightseeing but outside any eruv — and the hotels on Décarie Boulevard in Snowdon, which sit inside the Montreal Grand Eruv within walking distance of the Montreal Torah Center in Hampstead. The eruv joins Côte-Saint-Luc, Hampstead, Montréal West, Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Snowdon and Outremont into one continuous area, so a family staying in that belt can walk to shul and to meals with a stroller. Most local kosher establishments are certified by MK.

Getting Around
Public transit
The STM runs four metro lines from about 5:30 AM until after midnight (later on Saturday nights) plus a dense bus network.
Zone A fares, covering the whole island, in Canadian dollars: $3.75 single trip, $7.00 for two trips, $11.25 for 24 hours, $21.75 for three consecutive days, $17.00 for an unlimited weekend (Friday 4 PM to Monday 5 AM) and $6.75 for an unlimited evening (6 PM to 5 AM). Buses take exact change only; fares are sold at metro stations and in the Chrono app. The Orange Line's three Laval stations — Cartier, De la Concorde and Montmorency — are in Zone B and need an All Modes AB fare ($5.00 single, $13.75 for 24 hours); the weekend and evening passes already cover Laval. The REM light metro runs from Brossard through Central Station to Deux-Montagnes, and its Anse-à-l'Orme branch has served the West Island since May 2026; the airport branch is expected in 2027. The 747 bus links the airport with Lionel-Groulx metro and downtown 24 hours a day. Downtown, Old Montreal, Côte-des-Neiges, Snowdon, Outremont and Mile End are easy without a car, and Côte-Saint-Luc and Hampstead work by bus and metro; Laval and Dollard-des-Ormeaux are much easier with one.
Rideshare
Uber and Lyft both operate in Montreal, alongside metered taxis.
At Montréal-Trudeau, UberX picks up at Door 28 on the arrivals level; other Uber options and Lyft pick up at the P4 Express Drop-Off area, signposted inside the terminal. Taxis queue at Door 23 with a dispatcher and charge a flat rate to downtown of $49.45 between 5 AM and 11 PM and $56.70 overnight.
Car rental
At Montréal-Trudeau the rental counters are in the P4 parking garage (590 boulevard Albert-De Niverville), not in the terminal: leave by Door 28 on the arrivals level, follow the P4 signs and take the P4 shuttle from stop 3.
Right turns on red are prohibited everywhere on the Island of Montréal, with fines of $100–$200. Parking signs are in French and often stack several time rules on one pole; in winter, orange temporary no-parking signs mark overnight snow removal, and cars left there are towed.
Montréal-Trudeau International (YUL), in Dorval on the island, handles almost all flights and is about 20 minutes from downtown by car; Côte-Saint-Luc, Hampstead and Dollard-des-Ormeaux are all a shorter drive. The 747 bus runs 24 hours a day, every 10–20 minutes, to Lionel-Groulx metro and on to downtown hotels and Berri-UQAM; the $11.25 fare doubles as a 24-hour transit pass. From Lionel-Groulx, the Orange Line runs north to Snowdon. Plattsburgh International (PBG) in upstate New York, about an hour's drive from central Montreal plus the border crossing, is an alternative for some US domestic fares.
Good to know
Late May through early October is warm and festival-heavy, and summer is peak season; winters are cold and snowy, though downtown's underground network of passages keeps sightseeing possible. Hotels fill and prices climb around the Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend, held in May from 2026.
Québec's official language is French: street signs, parking rules and many menus are in French, though English is widely spoken in Côte-Saint-Luc, Hampstead, Westmount, the West Island and downtown. Posted prices exclude sales tax — 5% GST and 9.975% QST are added at the till — and a 15–20% tip is customary in restaurants and taxis. Décarie Boulevard runs as a sunken expressway through Snowdon; since 25 July 2026 the eruv lets you cross it on every cross street. Check the eruv status every week at eruvstat.us/montreal before carrying. In winter, downtown's underground passages link metro stations, malls and many hotels.
Montreal is generally safe for visitors; use ordinary big-city care with bags and phones on the metro and in busy downtown and Old Montreal streets, and treat winter ice on sidewalks as a real hazard. Emergency number: 911 for police, fire and ambulance. The SPVM (Service de police de la Ville de Montréal) polices the entire Island of Montréal, including Côte-Saint-Luc, Hampstead, Westmount, the Town of Mount Royal and Dollard-des-Ormeaux; Laval has its own municipal force, the Service de police de Laval.
