City overview
The Turks & Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory of about forty islands and cays at the southeastern end of the Bahamian chain, best known for Grace Bay Beach on Providenciales and for the reef that runs the length of the archipelago. Providenciales holds almost all of the country's resorts, restaurants and shopping, while Grand Turk, North, Middle and South Caicos and Salt Cay stay quiet and largely undeveloped. Jewish life in the country is young and centres entirely on Providenciales: Chabad of Turks & Caicos Islands, founded by Rabbi Shmulik and Chaya Berkowitz at the end of 2019, is the only Jewish congregation anywhere in the islands. The resident community is small and expatriate, and it swells through the winter season with second-home owners and visitors. Kosher food on the island is limited but real, and everything Jewish sits within the Grace Bay area.

Public transit
There is no public transport of any kind anywhere in the Turks & Caicos Islands.
No buses, no shuttles, no scheduled ground service on Providenciales or any other island. Informal jitney vans operate but are unlicensed and are best avoided.
Rideshare
Uber and Lyft do not operate in the Turks & Caicos Islands.
Conch Cab, the one local web-based ride service, is currently suspended for lack of drivers, so there is no active ride-hailing option in the country.
Car rental
A rental car is the practical way to get around and usually costs less than relying on taxis, at roughly $50 a day on Providenciales.
Driving is on the left. Hertz, Avis, Budget, Payless, Dollar, Sixt and Enterprise all operate through local franchises alongside independents such as Grace Bay Car Rentals, Island Life Jeeps and Turks Jeeps. Minimum age is generally 25, and a 12% government stamp duty is added on top of the quoted rate. Visitors holding US, Canadian, British Commonwealth or international licences may drive on their home licence for 30 days.
Main Airport: Howard Hamilton International Airport (PLS), Providenciales. Distance from Grace Bay: About 7 miles from Grace Bay, a 20 to 30 minute drive. Howard Hamilton International Airport on Providenciales, renamed in 2024 and still widely called Providenciales International, handles effectively every scheduled international flight into the country, with direct service from London, New York, Miami, Boston, Chicago, Toronto and more than two dozen other cities on British Airways, American, United, Delta, JetBlue, Air Canada, WestJet and interCaribbean. It sits about 7 miles from Grace Bay, a 20 to 30 minute drive depending on traffic on Leeward Highway. The country's other airports are JAGS McCartney International (GDT) on Grand Turk, Norman B. Saunders Sr. International (XSC) on South Caicos, Clifford Gardiner International (NCA) on North Caicos, Henry Leon Wilson Airport (SLX) on Salt Cay and Eric Arthur Airport (NDS) on Middle Caicos. Departure taxes and airport charges of up to $60 per adult leaving Providenciales are normally built into the airfare.
Good to know
February through April brings the driest weather, warm water in the low 80s and the reliably calm seas that make the reef and the outer islands accessible.
Almost everything on the islands is imported, so grocery and restaurant prices run well above US mainland levels; packing non-perishables in a checked bag is a normal thing to do here, and a rental car usually beats taxis on cost because taxis charge per person. Carry cash in small bills. Card readers go offline regularly, taxis and small vendors take cash only, ATMs on Providenciales are often out of service, North and South Caicos have one each, and Middle Caicos and Salt Cay have none. Check your restaurant bill before tipping, because many places add a 10% service charge on top of the mandatory 12% government restaurant tax. Driving is on the left, and rental quotes exclude a 12% government stamp duty. Shops cannot sell alcohol on Sundays, Good Friday, Christmas Day or election days, so provision ahead if you are self-catering. Sargassum is seasonal and avoidable: the leeward beaches at Grace Bay, Leeward, the Bight, Taylor Bay and Sapodilla Bay usually stay clear while the windward coasts collect it. Nearly every famous beach sits inside a national park, where taking shells, sand or coral is a criminal offence; you may export up to three mature conch shells, and coral never. Never pack anything firearm-related, including a single loose round.
The Turks & Caicos Islands are a generally safe destination and violent crime is concentrated away from the resort areas, but opportunistic theft does occur, most of it on Providenciales. Keep valuables out of parked cars and off the beach, avoid isolated areas and unlit ATMs after dark, and use licensed taxis rather than informal jitney vans, which operate illegally. One rule carries unusually heavy consequences: firearms and ammunition are illegal in the country, and the law is enforced against a single stray round found in checked luggage, with penalties running to long prison sentences. Check every bag carefully before you fly. Hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk from mid-August into September. Emergency numbers: Police, Fire and Ambulance: 911; Cheshire Hall Medical Centre, Providenciales (24-hour emergency department); Cockburn Town Medical Centre, Grand Turk (24-hour emergency department); Associated Medical Practices, Leeward Highway, Providenciales (recompression chamber): +1 649-946-4222; Disaster Management duty officer, Providenciales: +1 649-245-3363; Disaster Management duty officer, Grand Turk: +1 649-244-3363; Turks and Caicos Red Cross: +1 649-941-8056.
