Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island and U.S. territory, with San Juan as its capital and the arrival point for almost every visitor. The draw is the combination: 500-year-old Spanish fortifications and colourful colonial streets in Old San Juan, a rainforest and bioluminescent bays within an hour’s drive, and beach-resort strips in Isla Verde and Condado right beside the airport. Orthodox Jewish life on the island runs through Chabad of Puerto Rico in Isla Verde, minutes from the airport, which provides the daily minyan, the community eruv, kosher takeout, a kosher store and communal Shabbos meals. The island’s only certified kosher restaurant is in Miramar, San Juan.

Getting Around

Public transit

Tren Urbano is the metro rail line — 16 stations across roughly 10.7 miles linking San Juan, Guaynabo and Bayamón.

It does not serve Isla Verde, Condado or the airport, so it is of limited use to most visitors. AMA operates the metro bus network, 32 fixed routes across San Juan, Carolina, Guaynabo, Bayamón, Cataño, Toa Baja, Trujillo Alto and Loíza. Buses need exact coin change or a contactless card or phone. AMA fare: $0.75 per ride; $2.00 on routes E20 and E30. Unlimited passes (Tren Urbano / AMA): 1-day $5.00, 7-day $15.00, 30-day $50.00, 90-day $90.00. Bus hours: Monday–Friday 5:00 AM–9:00 PM, Saturday and holidays 6:00 AM–8:00 PM; only routes E30, E40 and T3 run Sundays.

Car rental

A rental car is worth it if you plan to leave the metro area — El Yunque, the Fajardo bio bays, the Camuy caves and Toro Verde all need one, and the island is small enough to cross in about two hours.

If you are staying in Isla Verde for a Shabbos-centred trip, you do not need one: the shul, hotels, beach and supermarkets are all walkable, and rideshare covers the rest. Major international and local agencies operate at the airport.

Airport

Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU). Distance to Isla Verde / Chabad: Roughly 2 miles — about 5–10 minutes by car. Distance to Condado: About 20 minutes by car. Distance to Old San Juan: About 20–25 minutes by car. SJU is the busiest airport in the Caribbean and the connecting hub for the region, with service onward to the Dominican Republic and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. Small-aircraft flights to Vieques and Culebra also leave from here. The airport sits immediately beside the Isla Verde hotel strip, which is the single biggest practical advantage of basing yourself there — you can be at your hotel, or at Chabad, within ten minutes of clearing baggage claim.

December through April is the driest and most comfortable stretch, with warm days and the lowest rainfall, while the Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks from August into October.

Insider tips

Stay in Isla Verde if the Jewish infrastructure matters to your trip. Chabad, the eruv, the daily minyan, the communal Shabbos meals and the kosher store are all in one small walkable pocket around Calle Rosa, and the airport is minutes away. Condado is the alternative if you would rather be closer to the kosher restaurant in Miramar, but it puts you a 20-minute drive from the minyan and outside the eruv. Order your food before you land. The Chabad-run kosher takeout is online-order-only with cutoffs the night before, and communal Shabbos meals fill up and close entirely on busy weekends. Yeshiva vacation week and Yom Tov periods have earlier, stricter deadlines and no late orders. Check the eruv the week you travel. It goes down periodically and the status is posted week by week rather than assumed. Take the dispatcher’s slip at the airport taxi kiosk rather than negotiating at the curb — it fixes the fare for your zone before you leave the terminal. No passport is needed for U.S. citizens, the currency is the U.S. dollar, and mainland U.S. phone plans generally work without roaming charges.

Safety & emergency

The main tourist districts — Old San Juan, Condado and Isla Verde — have a visible police presence, and officers assigned to those areas are bilingual and used to helping visitors. Puerto Rico is a U.S. jurisdiction, so 911 works exactly as it does on the mainland. Normal urban precautions apply: keep valuables out of sight in rental cars, stay on lit main streets at night, and be cautious in the water, since several beaches have strong currents and not all are lifeguarded.
