Puerto Rico

City overview

Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island and U.S. territory, with San Juan as its capital and the arrival point for almost every visitor. The draw is the combination: 500-year-old Spanish fortifications and colourful colonial streets in Old San Juan, a rainforest and bioluminescent bays within an hour’s drive, and beach-resort strips in Isla Verde and Condado right beside the airport. Orthodox Jewish life on the island runs through Chabad of Puerto Rico in Isla Verde, minutes from the airport, which provides the daily minyan, the community eruv, kosher takeout, a kosher store and communal Shabbos meals. The island’s only certified kosher restaurant is in Miramar, San Juan.

Eruv

Yes

A community eruv covers the Isla Verde area around Chabad. It is maintained by an eruv committee made up of Rabbi Mendel Zarchi, Rabbi Zalman Roth, Zion Salem and Eli Golshan, and its status is published week by week on the Chabad website ahead of Shabbos. The boundary ends at Begonia Street — anything south of Begonia is outside the eruv and carrying there is not permitted. Several streets adjoining the perimeter are also excluded, so read the boundary map carefully before walking near the edge rather than assuming a street is inside. The eruv has been down for individual weeks. When the general eruv is compromised, carrying directly to the shul has still been possible from a few residences immediately adjacent to Chabad, including Cape Sea Village and the permitted section of Calle Rosa. Confirm the current status with Chabad before Shabbos.
