Chabad of the Dominican Republic — Santo Domingo
Dominican Republic
Weekday
Daily minyanim are held at the centre — one of very few daily minyanim anywhere in the Caribbean. Exact times shift with the season and with how many people are in town, so contact Chabad by WhatsApp before your trip to confirm what will be running during your dates.
Shabbos
Friday evening and Shabbos morning services at the centre, with communal Shabbos meals by arrangement. Confirm times and reserve meals in advance.
Rabbi
Rabbi Shimon Pelman
The centre of Orthodox Jewish life in the country. Alongside the minyan it houses a mikvah, and Rimon Kosher Market — a full kosher supermarket and restaurant — operates immediately alongside at Calle 2B #10. Rabbi Pelman is a shochet and performs local shechita. The centre also coordinates kosher food and services for visitors in Punta Cana and on the north coast, and handles destination weddings, bar mitzvahs and business travellers.
Walking
In the Piantini business district of Santo Domingo, about fifty minutes from Las Américas airport. Several international hotels — among them the JW Marriott, Holiday Inn and Homewood Suites — sit within a seven to fifteen minute walk, which makes Shabbos straightforward if you book nearby. There is no eruv anywhere in the Dominican Republic, so nothing may be carried on the walk.
