Marin Headlands
San Francisco, CA · No entrance fee.
The Marin Headlands are part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge and a day trip from San Francisco. Dramatic cliffs of oceanic rock look out over the Golden Gate Bridge. Conzelman Road is where many visitors take their picture with the bridge, and Battery Spencer and Hawk Hill are popular vistas a short hike from the road.
Tips
From Highway 101 northbound, take the Alexander Avenue exit, the second exit after crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. Parking along Conzelman Road at Battery Spencer is limited and often full. Food vendors are limited, so bring your own snacks and water. The picnic area at Battery Wallace, near the Point Bonita Trailhead, has tables and grills but no water. Access from Wolfback Ridge Road is not permitted because it is private.
